The State of Texas is facing a major educational challenge — a growing shortage of qualified teachers. Whether you are a recent college graduate, a mid-career changer, a teacher from another state/country, or someone who does not yet have a college degree, the information below outlines how to become a teacher in Texas.

You may contact the State Board of Educators Certification (SBEC) Information and Support Center toll free at 1 (888) 863-5880.

Once you have an account with SBEC Online you can:

  • Apply for Standard Certification based on an approved Texas program
  • Apply for Additional Certification by Examination
  • Apply for Educational Aide Certification
  • Apply for duplicate certificates
  • Apply for a Probationary Certificate through an approved Texas program
  • Educators certified in another state or country may apply for a review of credentials
  • Educators certified in another state or country may apply for a One-Year or Standard Certificate following a review of credentials
  • Maintain your mailing address (required by SBEC board rule)
  • View the status of your certification applications
  • View your Texas certifications and examination results
  • View approved educator preparation programs by entity or certification area
