Reading Incentive Programs
Gilmore Elementary does not have the Accelerated Reader Program. Instead we offer other programs which encourage our students to read for pleasure from many genre. Those programs are described below:
Caught You Reading!
In 2005, the Clear Creek Educational Foundation awarded the Gilmore Library a "Caught You Reading" Grant to promote reading for pleasure at Gilmore. Here's how it works: Any student that is caught reading for pleasure at any time during the school day is eligible to receive a Caught You Reading coupon.
This includes morning duty time, after school duty time, or anytime during the day that a student chooses to read just because they want to. Students who have received a coupon are entered into a weekly drawing for a free paperback book.
Every Friday, there is one winner from each grade -- 6 free books each week. Developing life long readers and learners is our goal for Gilmore students, and it is our hope that encouraging reading in this way will support that goal.
Read Tac Toe
The Read Tac Toe program is up and running. It is a district initiative to encourage students to read books from all genres, and includes incentives which will be distributed from the library as the students achieve read- tac- toes this year.
The goal of the program is to give students as broad an experience as possible in choosing different books and genre. Hopefully, by experiencing many different genre, our students will find the ones that best fit their interest.
Research shows that children do not become life long readers unless we can match the right book to the right child, and this program gives kids a broad experience from which to find the books that will keep them connected to reading. Bluebonnet Program
The Texas Library Association puts out a list each year of recommended books for children in grades 3-6 that is called the Texas Bluebonnet List. Participating schools have their students read at least 5 of the books on the list, and in January students from all over the state have the opportunity to vote for their favorite of those books. The votes are tabulated, and the year's winner is announced state wide as the Texas Bluebonnet Winner.
It is the only state award winner that is chosen by students. This year, Gilmore's students will be participating in the voting for that award. All students in grades 3,4,5 who read five Bluebonnet books by our voting date in late January will be allowed to participate.
In addition awards will be given at the end of year awards ceremony for those students who read all 20 books on the list. I have explained the program to all 3,4,5 students, and they are aware of the requirements. If you would like to know more about the program, go to: http://www.txla.org/groups/tba/
Reading - It's Fun!
Book It! Every year, Gilmore students participate in the Book It! program. It gives children the opportunity to earn a free pizza from Pizza Hut. The program runs October through March. Look for more information from your child's teacher during this time.
Six Flags Read to Succeed Program
Six Flags and Weekly Reader team up to provide this program to schools within 150 miles of any Six Flags theme park. The program runs December through February and gives students the opportunity to earn a free ticket to any Six Flags theme park. Even though we exceed the 150 mile requirement, Six Flags coordinators graciously allowed Gilmore Elementary to continue to participate in the program. Look for more information about this program in your child's backpack in December.
Other Opportunities for Gilmore Families
Birthday Gator Books
Would you like to donate a book to the Gilmore Library in your child's honor? A birthday is a perfect time to do that! By making a $25.00 donation to the Gilmore Library, you allow us to purchase a brand new book that meets the selection criteria for the school district.
When the money is donated, you or your child will be allowed to select any book from the Birthday Gator Book Cart . That book will become the one you donate, your child will be the first to check it out, and we will put a book plate inside that says "This book was donated by _____ on her/ his Birthday,_ (Date)______, 2005.
Your child's name will also be announced over the loud speaker as close as possible to their birthday, and they will be given the privilege of carrying around a stuffed gator for the day. Before dismissal, the gator is returned for the next day's birthday gator kids.
Gilmore Circulation Policy
Checking Out Books
Each child, First through Fifth Grade, is encouraged to check out two books each time they visit the library. Children in Kindergarten begin with one book, and work their way up to two books as they become more able to care for them adequately.
- K-1st grades visit the library every week.
- Students 2-5 visit every other week.
- All books are due the next time a child’s class returns to the library and the checkout period is 2 weeks.
- Students who have finished a book and would like to exchange it before it is due are welcome to do so at any time.
- The Gilmore library is open during the entire school day, everyday for drop ins.
- Students may use the Internet for class projects if the CCISD Acceptable Use Policy has been returned with a parent signature.
- Students may not access their personal email in the library.
Overdue Books
There are no fees for overdue books at Gilmore. However, if a book is not returned on time, the student will not be allowed to check out any additional books until the missing book is returned or paid for.
Replacement Cost?
If a book is lost, the family will be charged replacement cost, plus two dollars for publisher processing.
Parent Book Check Out
Yes- parents can check out books from Gilmore's library!
To get a library card, you must take the time to come in and give us your information so we can set you up as a patron. CCISD has recently implemented a district wide policy allowing parents to check out as many as 5 books at a time. This is good news for families! Please feel free take advantage of this opportunity to share your love of reading with your child!
The Gilmore catalog can now be accessed at home! This is one of the features of our new district circulation system using the Accent Online Catalog. Have fun!
