Message from the Principal
Welcome to Space Center Intermediate School! Our 2009-2010 school year is destined to be an amazing year filled with astronomical success. We have many exciting opportunities for you to become intricately involved as a partner during this educational journey. Parents and staff can stay “up-to-speed” with what’s going on around SCIS, by simply joining our incredible SCIS PTA. Our PTA President, Darlene Selmarten, does an amazing job of uniting people to do great things for the overall benefit of our students (AKA our future). As SCIS PTA Members, our electronic PTA Newsletter will be e-mailed to you on a regular basis. Another way, for everyone to stay informed about the happenings at SCIS is for you to follow us on Twitter.com @ SCISchool.
For those of you that are new this year, you may not be aware of some of our many campus strengths:
- Amazingly multi-talented students
- Committed, as well as supportive, parents and community partners
- Compassionate, dedicated and student-centered staff
- Competitive and highly successful Fine Arts Department
- Creating/developing global connections/relationships through the use of cutting-edge technology
- Focus on maximizing the latest Web 2.0 Tools for learning
- TEA Academically Exemplary Campus
- Vivacious athletics program
This is certainly not an exhaustive list. It is, however, what makes us love to jump out of bed in the morning to be a part of this “something bigger” for a better world of the future.
Sincerely,
Susan Carpenter
Message from the Assistant Principals
As we all get ready to start a new school year, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Rogers, your assistant principals, would like to remind you to prepare for success. With a little preparation you can make this a fantastic year.
First, read a copy of your student handbook. You will be surprised how many questions this handbook can answer for you. Pay special attention to the dress code on page 11. This can keep you out of trouble as you decide what clothes to wear the first day of school. The attendance rules on page 19, and the policies about handling medications on page 28 are very important and worth a read.
Next, commit to using a planner. These are available in our school store or any store that sells school supplies. Keeping track of seven different classes is not easy. You’ll need to write assignments and due dates down to help remember them. Parents, this is a great way to check in on what’s going on with your student. Read over the planner and work with your child to prioritize and prepare long-term projects.
Get involved! There are lots of different ways to be a part of Space Center Intermediate: Athletics, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Homemaking, Theatre, Clubs, Student Council. We have many wonderful opportunities at SCIS so take the step to be a part of something. Go to a game, take in a concert or a play you won’t believe what your classmates can do.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. We are here to help. Come by the student center and meet our wonderful secretary, Mrs. Grant. We can not wait for you to be here!
