CCISD Crowns Spelling Bee Champ

PHOTO: (L to R)  CCISD’s annual Spelling Bee was held Saturday February 8, 2014. Sharil Maredia, a 6th grade student at League City Intermediate placed 2nd, while Syamantak Payra, an 8th grader at Westbrook Intermediate is the Clear Creek ISD Spelling Champion, placing first in the competition.


League City – It took more than five hours, but finally, there were two students left standing in the CCISD annual Spelling Bee. For the fourth straight year, Syamantak Payra, an 8th grader at Westbrook Intermediate School, won first place. The winning word was ‘dermal’.

The CCISD Spelling Bee was held February 8, 2014 at Mossman Elementary School in League City, Texas.  Sharil Maredia, a 6th grader at League City Intermediate won second place. Payra will advance to the Houston PBS Spelling Bee which will be televised live from the HoustonPBS Studios March 29, 2014. He won the Houston PBS Spelling Bee last year and advanced to the national contest where he earned a 7th place tie.

The Houston PBS Spelling Bee is the qualifying bee for 42 Texas counties for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the nation’s long-standing educational promotion since 1925.  The top two spellers of the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee win an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to represent Houston at the Scripps National Spelling Bee during Bee Week. The grand prize of the 2014 national contest carries a prestigious victory along with over $40,000 in cash and other prizes.
