Visual and Performing Arts Grow and Prosper in Clear Creek ISD

League City, Texas – Fine Arts are alive and well in the Clear Creek Independent School District and when it comes to finding their creative strengths in the Arts, students can choose from a vast array of opportunities including Art History and the mastery of two-dimensional media. They can decide to experience marching band, the soulful sounds of a jazz band, play strings in a chamber orchestra, sing in a choir or participate in a dance class to learn the latest techniques.

Over the past two years, CCISD has increased the Fine Arts budget by $160,000 for supplies and equipment. Five, third director positions were added to support the five comprehensive high school band programs and the latest bond referendum pumped $1.8 million into the budget to replace aging music instruments and equipment. The May 2013 Bond is also funding construction projects to build extensions to fine arts wings, refurbish fine arts classrooms and add fly lofts to Clear Brook, Clear Creek and Clear Lake high school auditoriums.

“It’s clear, CCISD is committed to growing a successful program,” said Dean Muths, Director of Visual and Performing Arts. “We strive to provide the best teaching materials, technology, and equipment needed, not to mention hire the best teachers in order to help our students succeed.”

To remain competitive, CCISD increased stipends for fine arts teachers to align with salaries offered by surrounding school districts. The instructional materials allotment of state funds this year allowed for an addition $1.5 million for new teaching materials and technology for the arts.

Clear Creek ISD also enjoys close partnerships with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston Symphony, Houston Symphony Bay Area League, Clear Lake Symphony and other Arts organizations which provide programs that expose every elementary aged child in CCISD to performances and exhibitions in music and art. At the secondary level, a partnership with the Houston Symphony even sends professional musicians into CCISD schools to teach master classes.

“Whether a student is in elementary, intermediate or high school in Clear Creek ISD, the goal is to offer each of them the chance to explore and excel in every area of the fine arts,” explained Muths.  “This is just one more reason why enrollment in the Arts in CCISD has grown by 2500 students (15%) since 2011.” A 2014 survey indicates if asked to grade Fine Arts, 87% of CCISD parents would give it an A or B.
