WESTBROOK INTERMEDIATE ROBOTICS TEAM WINS ROBOTICS COMPETITION
League City -- The Westbrook Intermediate School Robotics Team WIRED is celebrating a sensational performance in this year's Space City BEST Robotics competition. The WIRED team won 1st place in the prestigious BEST Award which is the overall top award, as well as 1st place in the Robot Performance competition, 1st place in the Oral Presentation, 1st place in Team Spirit and Best Mascot, and 2nd place in T-shirt design. The team was also presented with the Jacob's Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) Excellence Award.
The competition was held at Waltrip High School on October 31st. In the competition, 24 intermediate and high school teams were given six weeks to design and build a robot made primarily out of PVC, plywood, hardware, and electronics. The teams were also responsible for documenting their design process, making an oral presentation about their team, and promoting the development of engineering, science, and technology skills. This year's theme required the teams to collect several different game pieces that represented components of chemical equations. The pieces needed to be collected in the correct proportions to make isooctane molecules for use in "High Octane" fuel.
The WIRED team will now compete in the Texas BEST Regional robotics competition against the best teams from Texas and the surrounding states on December 4th and 5th. The event is being held at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. The team was led by faculty advisor, Lisa Pfeifer and had great mentors from the community including: Les Quiocho, Ross Pettinger, Steve Knerr, Chris Dupont, Kathleen Bezecny and high school mentor Jessica Knerr.
