Clear Creek ISD Student Selected for Lone Star Leadership Academy
Cheyenne Garcia, daughter of Karen Garcia and a student at Seabrook Intermediate School in the Clear Creek Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Austin area as a participant in Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy, June 9-13, 2003. Cheyenne’s selection for the Academy was based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership potential, a recommendation by her counselor, Mary Jane Musick, and Cheyenne’s school/community involvement including participating in dance and gymnastics. Education in Action, dedicated to fostering educated and involved Texans, hosts the Lone Star Leadership Academy to “Instill the Spirit of Texas in Tomorrow’s Leaders.”
Cheyenne’s Texas State Senator, the Honorable Mike Jackson, District 11, and Texas State Representative, the Honorable John Davis, District 129, have been notified of her accomplishment and are invited to attend the Lone Star Leadership Academy Welcome Breakfast send-off on Monday,
June 9, 2003 from 7:30am-8:30 am at the City of Irving Valley Ranch Public Library.
Joining a delegation of outstanding students, Cheyenne will develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas and its leaders. She will learn about future career and internship opportunities and visit historically, politically, and geographically significant sites including the Austin offices of her State Representative and Senator, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, LBJ Library, State Cemetery, Governor’s Mansion, State Capitol, Supreme Court and McKinney Roughs Environmental Learning Center. Additional activities will include an evening around the campfire with a cowboy storyteller, ice cream social, IMAX Theater, bat watching, guided rafting trip, Lone Star Riverboat Cruise and farewell program.
Lone Star Leadership Academy provides a unique opportunity for outstanding seventh graders to learn about the Spirit of Texas and what it truly means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups. In addition, participants meet students from area schools and make new friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement, and share with, their seventh grade Texas History classes.
Lone Star Leadership Academy calls for participants to become active citizens and leaders in their communities. Participants must be entering the seventh grade or have completed the seventh grade for summer programs and in the seventh grade for spring programs, hold a “B” average or higher, demonstrate academic ability and leadership potential and be involved in community or school activities. Students involved in student government and service organizations are especially good candidates for the Lone Star Leadership Academy. Facilitator/student ratio is 10 to 1 and all facilitators are Texas state certified teachers. For more information about Education in Action or the Lone Star Leadership Academy, call 817-285-8961.
