FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEAGUE CITY, Texas—League City Elementary School and Henry Bauerschlag Elementary School recently received a $25,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to promote and improve the schools’ literacy programs.
“The primary purpose of the grant is to improve reading instruction,” said Debbie Phillips, principal at League City Elementary. Phillips is using the funds to create an after-school tutoring program for children who are reading below grade level and she also plans to develop a parent’s training program.
Bauerschlag Elementary will use the funds to expand their reading library and purchase books and materials needed to implement a balanced literacy program, which includes smaller classroom reading groups.
“These materials will be used to improve the children’s reading scores in decoding and comprehension on the TAKS test and Developmental Reading Assessment test,” said Trudy Knight, Bauerschlag Elementary School principal.
In 2003 the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the nation’s largest local telecommunications provider, contributed $500,000 to 32 nonprofit groups and educational institutions throughout Texas to promote reading, reading recovery, English as a second language, childhood literacy and other programs designed to help create a better-educated work force.
