FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM CELEBRATES MILESTONE
On most campuses the focus is solely on helping students achieve academic excellence. At McWhirter Elementary School in Webster and Landolt Elementary in Friendswood there is also a program geared towards parents. Clear Creek ISD's English Literacy (EL) and Civics Education Program promotes family literacy.
The program recently celebrated with a graduation ceremony on each campus. The graduating students are CCISD parents who have been receiving adult English as a Second Language (ESL), literacy, and civics courses to better equip them to support their children's academic needs. The program has been funded through a federal grant administered through the Texas Education Agency since 2007 and by a grant from the Barbara Bush Texas Fund.
While these dedicated parents have been in class two days a week for the past school year, their elementary-age children were receiving additional instruction in the Children's Literacy Center to advance their own EL and academic progress. During the 2008 – 2009 school year 144 parents were involved in the program while 35 elementary students attended the Children’s Literacy Center.
