Galveston-Brazoria Cooperative for the Hearing Impaired

GBCHI is a regional day school program for students ages 0-22 who have an auditory impairment.  Implemented under directives from the Texas Education Agency, this program functions as an educational cooperative serving ten surrounding area school districts.  These include Alvin, Clear Creek, Dickinson, Friendswood, Galveston, Hitchcock, La Marque, Pearland, Santa Fe, and Texas City.

Referrals are received through the home district.  If you have any questions about referrals, please contact your local special education director.

Philosophy

We believe:

  • All children can learn according to their unique and individual learning styles
  • Parents are the 1st teachers and need continued support and information
  • In maximizing effective communication potential according to the child’s learning style
    • Through maximizing the use of residual hearing 
    • Total communication 
    • Amplification 
  • Literacy is the key to functional integration into society
  • Intrinsic motivation coupled with a positive self-concept equates to a successful learner
